Welcome to Okolona

Proudly known as “The Little City That Does Big Things!” As the Okolona Chamber of Commerce/Main Street, we celebrate our city’s vibrant heritage and dynamic future right here in the heart of Chickasaw County, Mississippi. Incorporated in 1850, Okolona stands as one of the county’s dual seats and thrives near the eastern border, with a legacy that has seen our population rise over 4,000 at our peak.

Our motto isn’t just words—it’s a testament to our extraordinary community spirit. During World War II, Okolona sold more war bonds than any U.S. community our size, earning the title “Nation’s Most Patriotic City.” In fact, we led the country in War Loan and War Fund Drives, setting an inspiring standard of commitment and unity. Our pioneering spirit also shines as we were the first city in Northeast Mississippi to welcome electricity in 1897 – a moment that still sparks pride among our residents.

Nestled in beautiful North Mississippi, Okolona is a special city with a unique charm. We’re just over 120 miles from Memphis International Airport, a short distance from major highways and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Port, and our own Okolona Municipal Airport, Richard Stovall Field (5A4). With a retail trade area serving nearly 40,000 people within a fifteen-mile radius, Okolona is ideally positioned for growth and opportunity. We’re also minutes away from respected institutions like Blue Mountain College, Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for Women, the University of Mississippi, East Mississippi, and Itawamba Community Colleges —making us a hub for education and talent.

Our story began as a bustling railroad town and has evolved into a diverse economy, now including thriving furniture manufacturing. Okolona’s National Historic District features approximately 200 preserved buildings and homes, reflecting our deep respect for history and progress. Since becoming a designated Mississippi Main Street community in 2000, we have continually revitalized our Main Street, working hand-in-hand with local businesses, non-profits, churches, and government to create a welcoming environment for all.

Our mission, adopted on August 13, 2019, guides us every day: to enhance the quality of life and place for all Okolona citizens through beautification, infrastructure improvements, and unwavering community support.

Did you know Okolona was originally called Rose Hill before discovering another town with the same name? In 1850, as our post office opened, Colonel Josiah N. Walton—then postmaster of nearby Aberdeen—suggested “Okolona” to honor a Chickasaw warrior he once met. The name, with roots meaning “peaceful, yellow, or blue water,” reflects our Native American heritage and the spirit of people gathered together.

At the Okolona Chamber of Commerce/Main Street, we are committed to honoring our rich history while building a strong, inclusive, and innovative future. Join us as we continue to do big things – together!
