Veterans Day Parade Brings Okolona Together
On November 11, 2025, Main Street in Okolona transformed into a vibrant scene of gratitude and celebration as the Okolona Area Chamber of Commerce/Main Street, in partnership with the City of Okolona, hosted the annual Veterans Day Parade. The event began at 10:00 AM, drawing local residents and organizations out to honor those who have served our nation.
Community Collaboration and Spirited Participation
Several community groups played an integral role in the festivities. The Chieftain Pride Marching Band set a lively tone, while student organizations such as OHS Sr. BETA, FCCLA, and the OES Little Chieftains joined in, demonstrating the town’s deep appreciation for its veterans. Their participation reflected the unity and pride that define Okolona.
Recognizing Our Honored Veterans
This year’s parade paid special tribute to a distinguished group of honorees who attended the celebration:
- Kenneth Evans
- James Vernon, Jr.
- J.D. King
- Curtis Maharrey
- Gib Wise
- Oliver Johnson III
- Robert Maharrey
- Unshay Randle
- Tommie Bowens
- Fred Gandy

- Kelvin Standfield
The community recognized these individuals for their service and sacrifice, with special donations earmarked for unique accomplishments: J.D. King was honored as The Oldest Living Veteran, Unshay Randle as The Youngest Living Veteran, and Gib Wise as The Longest Serving Veteran. Each received recognition during the Veterans’ Day Luncheon, a heartfelt event sponsored by the Okolona section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW).
Supporting Veterans Through Community Engagement
The luncheon following the parade provided a meaningful opportunity for both honorees and attendees to connect and reflect on the importance of service. Community members contributed donations, ensuring that those who have given the most are recognized—not just with words, but with tangible acts of appreciation.
Celebrating Creativity: Poster Contest Sponsored by Turner’s Flowers & Gifts
Adding a creative twist to this year’s celebration, Turner’s Flowers & Gifts sponsored a poster contest, offering an in-kind donation to the winner(s). This contest encouraged participants of all ages to artistically express their gratitude and respect for veterans, further strengthening the spirit of community involvement.
A Tradition of Honor and Unity
The Okolona Area Chamber of Commerce/Main Street and its partners are proud to continue this tradition of honoring local veterans. Events like the parade and luncheon foster a sense of unity, gratitude, and community pride—values that make Okolona a special place to call home.
